Over this extended weekend break, we will be exploring the best trails that the area has to offer. The Cairngorm National Park is home to some of the UK's most rugged and inspiring wilderness. The mountain trails feel remote and adventure is guaranteed.

The area provides real variety, from the lakes and forests in the valleys to an environment that is most akin to arctic tundra on the summits. The running will be mainly on trails but in the higher mountains, there will be some off-trail running too.

This weekend is designed for the adventurous runner that wants to experience this unique environment. Active trail runners of all abilities are welcome but you will get the most out of the trip if you have run up to 20km on the trails previously.

How it works:

Day 1: Friday

We will meet at Loch Morlich beach car park (https://forestryandland.gov.scot/visit/forest-parks/glenmore-forest-park/loch-morlich-beach) at 2pm ready to run. After making our introductions and having a brief chat about the weekend, we will get out onto the trails for a shakeout run. This will be about 13km with around 600m of elevation gain. About 2 hours running, giving you time to get back to your accommodation for showers and food.

Day 2: Saturday

This will be our long mountain run day. We will meet ready to run at Loch Morlich at 9am. After a morning briefing, kit check and warm-up we will head off on our run heading for the famous Cairngorm Summit. Todays planned run will be approx 26km with around 1300m of elevation gain. We will make a day of it and the focus will be on enjoying the mountains and not rushing. There will be options to extend or shorten the day depending on the group and, as always, the weather will play a big part in the days plans.

Day 3: Sunday

Our final days run, and again we will meet at Loch Morlich at 9am. Today will be a mix of forrest trails and classic mountain terrain. The run will be approx 18km with 600m of elevation gain. The end to a perfect training weekend exploring the mountains.

Travel and Accommodation:

Getting there by car. It's a long drive from everywhere...but it's worth it! Aviemore is the closest large town to our meeting point at Loch Morlich and is right on the A9, a major road. Upon booking I will add participants to a WhatsApp group is car shares want to be organised.

Getting there by train - There is a sleeper train from southern stations in England. Aviemore is the closest train station to our meeting point at Loch Morlich.

Getting there by air - it is possible to fly to Inverness and take a train or bus to Aviemore.

Accommodation: In light of the current climate regarding Covid-19 I have taken the decision to not include group accommodation in the cost of this camp (in fact it is almost impossible to book group accommodation currently). This gives you the freedom to stay in the type of accommodation that you would most prefer as well as not having to share with other unknown guests. It will also give you the option of either travelling to the event on the Thursday night or the Friday morning.

Below are some suggestions for accommodation in the local area, and I recommend you either choose one of these options or book something close by. We will have a convenient meeting point to meet at the start of each day and we will start our runs from there.

The closest place to our meeting point and my top recommendation for accommodation is the Cairngorm Lodge Youth Hostel.

Badaguish Forest Lodgest are also close by and offer forest lodges and camping pods, as well as a traditional campsite.

Just down the road in Aviemore you will find a selection of more traditional hotels and B&B's.

Kit List:

Running shoes (something with a good tread designed for off-road running), waterproof jacket, waterproof trousers, running pack with the ability to carry 1 litre of water plus spare layers, hat, gloves, spare warm layer, trail snacks, mobile phone (with a waterproof bag/cover … just in case!). For sunny forecasts, a cap and sunglasses might be handy.
