Introduction to Mountain and Sky Running - 2 Days - Lake District

Time & Location

03 Jul, 09:00 – 04 Jul, 17:00
Great Langdale, Great Langdale, Ambleside LA22 9JY, UK

Have you ever wanted to venture off the beaten track and into more technical terrain? This 2 day skills course is designed for people that want to do just that!

Over the 2 days we will look at all the skills you need to plan routes, move safely and become a well rounded mountain runner. There is something pretty special about running along a high mountain ridge, or running down rocky scree slopes - my aim is to give you the confidence to be able to tackle this kind of terrain comfortably and safely.

You don’t need to be a climber or extreme ultra runner to sign up to this weekend, just be a keen runner that is happy to be on your feet for the whole day and willing to learn!

How it works:

Day 1: Saturday

You will meet Sam at The Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel in Great Langdale at 0900 and after a brief chat about the weekend, mountain conditions and kit check, we will head to the hills. Today we will focus on route choice and safe movement whilst scrambling as well as steep descending skills.

We will be out on the mountain for between 5 and 6 hours so there will be plenty of time to ask lots of questions, get lots of input from Sam and, of course, take loads of photos.!

Day 2: Sunday

We will meet again at The Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel at 0900. Today we will head into more technical ground and put the skills from yesterday to good use. There will also be a focus on one-to-one coaching feedback so you go away from the weekend feeling like you have developed as much as possible!

Travel and Accommodation:

Travel: The easiest is by car and this is recommended. Alternatively, you can take the train to Windermere then taxi or bus to Langdale.

Accommodation: In light of the current climate regarding Covid-19 I have taken the decision to not include group accommodation in the cost of this weekend. This gives you the freedom to stay in the type of accommodation that you would most prefer as well as not having to share with other unknown guests. It will also give you the option of either travelling to the event on the Friday night or the Saturday morning. I feel like this is the safest option for everyone involved.

This weekend will be centred around the Langdale Valley, and there are plenty of accomodation options from campsites to luxury hotels in the area. Langdale has a great campsite and there are plenty of other accommodation options in Ambleside, 15mins away.

Kit List

Running shoes (something with a good tread designed for off-road running), waterproof jacket, waterproof trousers, running pack with the ability to carry 1 litre of water plus spare layers, hat, gloves, spare warm layer, trail snacks, mobile phone (with a waterproof bag/cover … just in case!). For sunny forecasts, a cap and sunglasses might be handy. If you have some running poles then bring them along as we can offer specific coaching on running with poles - really handy for those hilly ultras!
