About the Event

The Snowdonia National Park offers a spectacular and unique environment to test your running skills - with views down to the Irish sea from some of Britain's highest and most rugged mountains, North Wales has everything a trail runner needs!

Over the weekend you will be looked after by Sam (fully qualified mountain leader and running coach). Throughout the weekend will look at all of the skills you need to navigate yourself around the hills and keep yourself safe whilst running. Not only will we cover loads of navigation skills but Sam will offer coaching and advice to help you deveople your trail runing skills. 

There will be plenty or opportunities to ask loads of questions, share stories and have a great weekend of training with a bunch of like-minded people. Sam always caters to everyone's needs and will do his very best to make sure that the weekend is as inclusive as possible.

This weekend is desgined for beginer navigators and runners that are comfortable running around 10km over undulating terrain. We will be out in the hills for most of the day but we will not be running for all of that time, this is a skills based course so the emphasis will be on learning, not on how much distance we cover! 

- Travel & Accommodation:

Accommodation: In light of the current climate regarding Covid-19 I have taken the decision to not include group accommodation in the cost of this weekend. This gives you the freedom to stay in the type of accommodation that you would most prefer as well as not having to share with other unknown guests. It will also give you the option of either travelling to the event on the Friday night or the Saturday morning. I feel like this is the safest option for everyone involved.

The meeting point for this weekend will be in Capel Curig so be sure to book accomodation close by. There is a campsite just down the road and a few hotels close by. Betws-y-Coed is a sort drive away and has lots of acccomodation options. 

Travel: It is most convient to travel by car as this gives us flexibility as to where we run each day, but it is possible to take the train to Bangor and then get a taxi to your accomodation. Just be sure it is close to Capel Curig! 

- How it works:

Day 1: Saturday

Meet Sam at 0900 for a welcome chat where we will discuss plans for the weekend and answer any questions you have before hitting the trails. We will do a quick kit check to make sure that everyone is going to be safe and comfortable out on the trails. There will be a short workshop on how to warm up properly, tailored specifically towards a race day warm-up. Now that we are ready we will head out into the hills. We will be out on the trails for about 5 - 7 hours depending on what people want to achieve. We will always aim to tailor the day to the needs of the group.

We will finish our run back at our meeting point and you will have the option of joining in with a strength and conditioning workshop before you head back to your accommodation. 

Day 2: Sunday

We will meet, ready to run, at 0900. After a quick warm-up we will hit the trails to discover some different trails in the local area. Today, we will put the emphasis on some one to one coaching and give you plenty of time to practice and develope what you learnt on Saturday. 

We will be out on the trails for around 5 - 6hrs, stopping to make time for specific coaching points in different terrain.

We aim to be back at our start point around 1500 to do a final Q&A and give everyone plenty of time to get home after a full weekend of smashing the trails!

Kit List

Running shoes (something with a good tread designed for off-road running), waterproof jacket, waterproof trousers, running pack with the ability to carry 1 litre of water plus spare layers, hat, gloves, spare warm layer, trail snacks, mobile phone (with a waterproof bag/cover … just in case!). For sunny forecasts, a cap and sunglasses might be handy. If you have some running poles then bring them along as we can offer specific coaching on running with poles - really handy for those hilly ultras!
