Winter Trail Running Training Camp - Lake District

Time & Location

08 Jan 2022, 09:00 – 09 Jan 2022, 16:00
Keswick, Station St, Keswick CA12 5LH, UK

Have you ever wanted to venture off the beaten track and into the high mountains in the winter months? This 2 day skills course is designed for people that want to do just that - and the mountains of the Lake District are a perfect place to learn these new skills.

Over the 2 days we will look at all the skills you need to plan routes, move safely and become a well rounded winter mountain runner. We will be looking closely at the equipment that is necessary to keep you safe as well as the specific movement techniques it is important to master. Close attention will be paid to weather forecasts and how to create safe running plans dependant on the conditions.

There is something very satisfying about being able to head into the mountains in extreme conditions  - my aim is to give you the confidence to be able to tackle everything that winter in the mountains can throw at you!

You don’t need to be an extreme ultra runner to sign up for this weekend, just be a keen and active trail runner that is happy to be on your feet for the whole day and willing to learn!

How it works:

Day 1: Saturday

You will meet Sam at Keswick Youth Hostel at 0900 and after a brief chat about the weekend, mountain conditions and kit check, we will head to the hills. Today we will focus on route choice, proper equipment choice and safe movement as well as steep descending skills.

We will be out on the mountain for between 5 and 6 hours so there will be plenty of time to ask lots of questions, get lots of input from Sam and, of course, take loads of photos!

After dinner you will have the option to join Sam for a Q&A session and an in detail look at weather forecasting and information gathering to help keep your adventures safe.

Day 2: Sunday

We will meet again at Keswick YHA at 0900. Today there will be the opportunity to head into more technical ground and put the skills from yesterday to good use. There will also be a focus on one-to-one coaching feedback so you go away from the weekend feeling like you have developed as much as possible!

Travel and Accommodation:

Travel: The easiest is by car. Leave the M6 at Junction 40 and take the A66 to Keswick . Alternatively, you can take the train to Penrith then bus or taxi to Keswick.

Accommodation: In light of the current climate regarding Covid-19 I have taken the decision to not include group accommodation in the cost of this weekend. This gives you the freedom to stay in the type of accommodation that you would most prefer as well as not having to share with other unknown guests. It will also give you the option of either travelling to the event on the Friday night or the Saturday morning. I feel like this is the safest option for everyone involved.

We will be using the Keswick YHA as our base and this is a great accommodation option but there are plenty of other accommodation options from campsites to luxury hotels a short walk away.

Kit List:

Running shoes (something with a good tread designed for off-road running), waterproof jacket, waterproof trousers, running pack with the ability to carry 1 litre of water plus spare layers, hat, buff, gloves (1 x windproof pair, 1 x warm insulated pair), spare warm thick base layer, light insulated down or primaloft jacket, trail snacks, mobile phone (with a waterproof bag/cover … just in case!).
